North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU)

NEMSU–Lianga has established a strong research culture, particularly in coastal resource management, marine biodiversity, fisheries, aquaculture, and aquatic ecosystem conservation. Its areas of expertise include corals, seaweeds, seagrasses, finfishes, holothurians, mangroves, and other aquatic resources. These areas support the campus' commitment to the sustainable utilization, conservation, and protection of marine and coastal ecosystems.

The campus continues to strengthen its role in research and innovation through collaborations with government agencies, research institutions, and local communities. Recent initiatives include participation in seaweed research and development activities with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Seaweed Research and Development Center (SeaRDeC). These activities involve the assessment of seaweed-farming practices, cultivar evaluation, field sampling, taxonomic identification, and the identification of challenges and innovations among seaweed farmers in Surigao del Sur.

NEMSU–Lianga's research environment also contributes to marine biodiversity studies. Its faculty and students have participated in field research that has contributed to scientific work on marine organisms in Surigao del Sur, demonstrating the campus' continuing contribution to the documentation and understanding of the region's aquatic biodiversity.

The campus also maintains a strong commitment to community extension and sustainable livelihood development. Its fisheries and aquaculture activities, including the culture of bangus, tilapia, and crab, together with its extension programs in coastal barangays, demonstrate the application of academic knowledge and research to real community needs. In 2010, the campus' Project Coastal Resource Initiative in Lianga Bay received national recognition after being named the Best HEI Extension Program in the Caraga Region, highlighting its contribution to coastal-resource management and community development.

Today, NEMSU–Lianga offers programs that support its multidisciplinary educational mission, including Bachelor of Science in Fisheries, Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology, Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, and other programs in education, business, hospitality, and computer science. Several of its programs have achieved accreditation, including Level III accreditation for Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology according to NEMSU's current program listings.

Through quality instruction, research, innovation, and community collaboration, NEMSU–Lianga continues to develop professionals and researchers who contribute to the sustainable management of fisheries, marine ecosystems, and coastal communities in Surigao del Sur and the wider Caraga Region.
